Troubleshooting

A folder says "No permission"

macOS protects the Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders, removable volumes and a few others: the first time the app reads one, the system asks whether to allow it, and a refusal shows as "No permission" in the pane. System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Files and Folders ▸ Ocelot File Manager changes the answer. A build made from source is signed ad hoc, so macOS may ask again after each rebuild.

Full Disk Access

A few things need Full Disk Access: "Import Favorites from Finder" (macOS keeps that list private), and folders such as Mail's that the system hides from apps. Settings ▸ Access & Startup shows whether it is granted and has "Grant Full Disk Access…", which opens the right pane of System Settings; turn the app on there (add it with "+" if it is not listed) and relaunch. macOS offers no way for an app to request this itself.

"Can't browse the local network"

Nearby computers are found through the local network, which macOS lets an app use only after asking once. System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Local Network has the switch. Servers you connect to by address work without it.

A server does not answer

A folder on a slow or vanished server shows "Waiting for the server…" after a moment and "Server Not Responding" with Retry and Disconnect after 30 seconds; the window stays usable throughout. Disconnect ejects the share. A saved folder on such a server never holds up the launch: the app opens Home and says which folder it skipped. See Network and servers.

"The table says I may write, but I cannot"

Properties ▸ Sharing & Permissions can show "Read & Write" on your row while an access control entry further down denies the write; such entries show as "Custom". In Terminal, ls -le <path> prints every entry and chmod -a# N removes one. The Lite edition shows these entries but cannot change them; the Pro edition can. See Permissions.

The Size column shows "—" or "> 12 GB"

"—" means folder sizes are not measured in the background (Settings ▸ General) or the folder is on a network volume, where they never are. "> 12 GB" is a folder too big to count within two seconds; the app finishes the count later, when nothing else is going on. Properties always count a folder's size, live.

A plugin stopped working

Settings ▸ Plugins shows why:

Each plugin has a log tail in the same pane. See the plugin guide.

Folder views look wrong

Each folder keeps its own view settings. View ▸ "Reset This Folder to Default" forgets one folder's; Settings ▸ General ▸ "Reset All Folders…" forgets them all.

A file name looks wrong on purpose

A name shown with a warning sign contains an invisible character that reverses the letters after it, so that "photo‮gpj.app" would read as "photo.jpg" elsewhere. The app shows the real order. Treat such a file with care: the trick is used to make a program pass for a document.

Starting fresh

Quit the app, then remove its data folder ~/Library/Application Support/OcelotFM (plugins, templates, the per-folder views and saved servers live there) and its cache under ~/Library/Caches. Settings, favorites and the saved session are in the app's preferences; saved passwords stay in the Keychain as items named "Ocelot — <server>" until you delete them in Keychain Access.
